Richmond, VA

This is Richmond. When I've driven through before I always thought it suspect, what with its giant Marlboro cigarette right on I-95. But once you actually go into part of the city, you'll see some of it is actually very nice. The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, painted as a mural on a downtown building.

I suppose this is the historic district. It may also be called the River district, but I'm not sure. The James River runs through the center of the city and there are some great lofts and clubs in that area. These first few pictures are in the downtown area that may or may not be the river district, but is certainly historic-looking!

If you walk along Canal Street, I think that is where we picked up the Canal Walk, which I'll show you later.
A couple shots from I-95 on our way in.

We ate dinner at an Irish pub restaurant called Sin e (pronounced Shinay). It means 'there it is.' Heidi and Clinton are here in the downstairs part where there's a waiting room and restrooms, and the next picture is just my sisters and I.

Here is one of the many tiles along the Canal Walk that point out what the view is. The next few pictures are of the canal itself.

At the end of the Canal Walk, there is a bridge that takes you back over the canal into downtown. There is a nice flowery park area on the downtown side of the canal. Across the canal from this park is a large green area where they hold concerts, as evidenced by the stage and hundreds of port-a-potties. Beyond the green is the James River.
Katie, Clinton and Heidi on the Canal Walk.
Here I am on the bridge leading back to downtown. That park with the flowers is on my left and the James River is on my right.
Strangely, along the Canal Walk is the Reynolds Wrap distribution plant. The door was wide open, and nobody was around, so we all popped in and took a peek. It was just like one of those shows on the learning channel that tell you how hot dogs are made.
Once we crossed back over into downtown, we asked a Richmond native how to get to the Fan. Heidi was intent that we see the Fan, a part of the city so named because at the intersection of Main and Belvidere, the streets fan out instead of remaining in grid style. The house below is one of many nice houses along Main Street.

Our walk to the Fan took an indeterminate amount of time, but we timed our walk back to Sin e where we had parked and it was a 40 minute walk. The Fan was not that impressive to me personally, because there was not much to see or do besides VCU, which is Virginia Commonwealth University. I bet most people don't know that Virginia isn't a state; it's a commonwealth. The differences are relatively ambiguous to me, but there are 5 or 6 states that are really commonwealths. Massachusetts is another one that I've just been to. Anyway, the rest of these night time pictures I took on our 40 minute walk back to the car.
